Dark Brahmas

Two Dark Brahma hens and a guinea.
Admitted to the American Poultry Association's Standard of Perfection in the 1870's, Brahmas are majestic, calm natured birds worthy of greater numbers.
Originating in the Brahmaputra region of India, the Brahma is an Asiatic breed of chicken whose heritage is unclear. However, they are believed to be closely related to the Jungle Fowl and the Cochin.
First brought to America in 1846, they were used primarily as a utility fowl, being hardy, generous egg layers with a good quality carcass. Today their utility characteristics have taken a back seat to their ornamental purposes.
Our goal is to work on bringing back the utility aspect of this wonderful fowl - our hens do lay generously (medium sized brown eggs) and very efficiently for such large birds averaging 8.5lbs. The standard weight for a rooster is around 11lbs.
Among their many other attributes, they are foragers and excellent broodies.
