We have sold all our American Guinea Hogs to Karen Cline who can be reached via the contact form at "http://gourmetacres.weebly.com/hogs-karen-cline.html"
The drought and lack of hay has been truly terrible so, to keep our flock safe, we moved them to South Dakota. Stay tuned for updates.
We checked eyes and carried out the first worming since using the Ivomec Sheep Drench during the February blizzard. I'm pleased with what I saw. We had a couple of pale eyes, one REALLY pale eye, but overall they looked good. I did go ahead and worm those who didn't have bright red eyes, just because this is Oklahoma and we are headed into even hotter weather. Dectomaxx and Levamasole are my two of choice currently.
Lambs looked good and I had one that I didn't need to deworm since her eyes were red, red, red. Way to go Midge! We'll do CD/T over the weekend. Our bees arrived on May 26th. Hubby went to collect the hive and brought it back in the cab of the truck. As a Pest Control Technician of many years, he isn't phazed by small stinging creatures and has always been fond of bees.
We are on a bit of a steep learning curve since we hadn't put the frames together correctly (our instructions neglected to tell us we needed to wire the frames for extra foundation support - luckily the gentleman who is patiently tutoring us pointed out our mistakes and showed us how to correct them - thanks Carl!) so we had to do a mad scramble and get those corrected. We are using sugar water to ensure they have sufficient food - this cool, wet spring weather in Oklahoma has really put a monkey-wrench in a lot of our plans - still, we'll keep them well fed until the first deep is 80% full and we know they have a strong start. I surprised myself by not being worried about being stung as we worked to get the bees off the frames gently without overly stressing them. Looking forward to helping conserve bees - fascinating creatures! Today hubby met up with Carole and brought Candy home - we are very excited that she is joining us, and Carole is equally excited that she took Heaven home with her. We'll see in a few months if Heaven has any kids out of Elvis. Very exciting stuff all round!
Midge continues to grow and is now taking 8oz four times a day! She is leaping and cavorting and convinced that she is a dog - not what we'd like but we'll take a live lamb who thinks she is a dog over a dead
Petunia, quietly and with dignity, lambed a lovely black ewe lamb early yesterday evening, April 12th. Unless Faye is pregnant, we're all done!
Annie gave birth yesterday afternoon, to our first Kunningi grandson out of Prestor - way to go Annie!
We started the morning with twins out of Mia x Samuel and ended the day with a lovely spotted black and white ewe lamb out of Viola x Samuel. Now we know that both Viola and Samuel carry spotting. Yay!
This year's color seems to be black since we have now had 5 black ewe lambs and one spotted black and white. With Annie, Faye and Petunia left to go, we'll see if that continues to hold true. Mia gave birth to jet black 5lb twin girls this morning before 7am. Way to go Mia!
